GARNET AND BLACK MAGAZINE

Publication Design, Illustration, Augmented Reality Animation

During my time as a designer and Art Director of Garnet and Black, University of South Carolina’s student magazine, I created print layouts for 12 articles featured in 5 of its biannual print editions. Adhering to the magazine’s style guide, I made sure each spread fit the brand to create cohesion.

For the magazine’s Spring 2023 print edition, “Looking Forward”, I had the honor of collaborating on the cover design. This edition had a special theme involving the future of technology and how augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) impact the way we interact with each other. The individual on the cover is a metahuman created by my colleague using Unreal Engine’s Metahuman Creator. QR codes appear throughout this issue that lead to different AR experiences including traditional and interactive animations, audio, video, and more.

For “The Rise (and consequences) of Online Anonymity”, I designed the print spread and created the augmented reality animation for the piece. The AR experience features real anonymous quotes from Yikyak within a 5 mile radius of UofSC’s campus and open dialogue for users to question the impact of online anonymity in society overall.

“A YARN-tastic Campus” details the rise of crocheting among young people and how the hobby is no longer just for older generations. I created all aspects of the spread including layout, crochet-related illustrations, and the background crochet texture.  This article’s spread was published in the Fall 2021 print edition of Garnet and Black.

“The Roaring 2020s” discusses how fashion has changed over the last century and where the industry is heading. I was responsible for layout and designed elements including the headline, background pattern, and technological circuit board lines to juxtapose the 1920s with the 2020s. This article’s spread was published in the Spring 2023 print edition of Garnet and Black.
